News & Events

The Municipality of Bologna, with the action C1 of the European project LIFE Clivut, in March 2022, has planted 157 trees for the growth and replacement of the public tree heritage.

Action C1 of the LIFE Clivut project aims to deepen the knowledge of the technicians of the municipal administration to improve the management of Urban Green. The added value of the project is to bring together and exchange the experiences of various local administrations together with international research centres, specialized in the study of plant behaviour in the urban environment.

The process of "capacity building", i.e. the acquisition of more information and the ability to put into practice the new knowledge, has seen in the year of the project (2020) the organization of a training course and multidisciplinary working tables, coordinated by a pool of agronomists, botanists and experts in the design of urban green, these meetings were followed by moments of sharing with local stakeholders to arrive, in March 2022, to the drafting of a Strategy for urban green and climate.

Among the topics covered in the working tables are:
• tree mechanisms and characteristics that ensure specific tree types have a greater capacity to provide useful climate services;
• the impact of urban tree management techniques (such as pruning, irrigation, etc.) on their potential to mitigate climate change;
• the importance of the location of trees (streets, parking lots, distance from buildings, etc.) for warming mitigation;
• the main sources of emissions and pollution in urban areas;
• the economic value calculated in terms of increased well-being, safety and health of citizens;
• the key value of preserving native biodiversity.

Action C1 will conclude between 2022 and 2023 with the implementation phase of the Strategy, once shared with the citizenship.
